Workshop at Creativity Explored
Here are some posts from the Creativity Explored blog. Thing I see Every Day was a six week workshop that I lead, working with five artist using six different mediums to illustrate photos that the artists took. Please read on to learn more…
Things I See Every Day
In the Studio
An interesting workshop, “Things I See Every Day”, has begun at our Arkansas Street studio. Led by guest artist Leah Tischler, the workshop’s goal is to generate four projects from a single source photograph. Each artist was given a disposable camera to capture images or situations from their everyday lives. One of these photos will be chosen as the basis for the next four pieces of art. Beginning with a drawing and moving through painting, sculpture, and finally, switching art-forms to writing, the next four weeks will be spent investigating, detailing, and expanding the photo into new artworks.
Eric Boysaw, Laron Bickerstaff, Edana Contreras, Michael B. Loggins, and Thomas Pringle are the participating artists. We’ll update their progress as the work takes its different shapes.
Things I See…update
In the Studio
The artists at our Arkansas Street studio have been busy making pieces for the “Things I See Every Day” workshop. Each artist has chosen the photograph that will be the source of the following projects, and the drawings and paintings have begun!
Look for images of Eric Boysaw’s photo of a tree and the subsequent painting. Next are Laron Bickerstaff’s photo of a computer screen displaying a picture of CE artist Allura Fong, and then the drawing and painting made from the photo of the friend displayed on the computer’s desktop that was captured in the first photograph, whew!, that’s practically a conceptual art-piece. Then, Michael Bernard Loggins’ photograph of his tape recorder and the drawing. These are followed by Thomas Pringle’s photo of a book of photographs open on his desk (more high-concept ideas), and the drawing and painting afterward. Finally, check out Edana Contreras’ drawing made from her photo of the bicycle area in the lobby of her building. Some are a little mind-bending, but all the projects are exciting to watch as they develop.

Things I See…Finale
In the Studio
The workshop has ended at the Arkansas St. studio but the artworks created from it will keep the memory of “The Things I See Every Day” alive and bustling for a long time. The final sculptures and writings are finished and the translation from source photograph into four different artistic languages is complete. The artists have shown that an amazingly diverse amount of work can spring from a simple, self-imposed restriction. And that, in an era typified by an endless amount of choice and stimulation, sometimes, creating a limitation, and focusing intensely on it, can lead to an abundance of beautiful everyday things.

Rock Make Sunday August 24th 2008
If the idea of a San Francisco street fair conjures up tired images of funnel cakes, and guys playing didgeridoos, prepare to be blown away by the FIFTY amazing independent local designers, artists and craftspeople and TWELVE great indie rock bands at this year’s Rock Make event. It’s a great chance to get some great bargains on high-end pieces from nationally renowned artisans while enjoying some great music. It’s a free, all ages, totally DIY event and an excellent way to spend a warm Sunday afternoon!
Happy 40th Anniversary
For my parents 40th wedding anniversary I made a “This American Life” inspired radio program. Even If you don’t know Barb and Lenny you will enjoy the show.
It’s a short glimpse of life during the 60’s and a love story of two individuals from completely different backgrounds. Barb Devine, an innocent Irish Catholic girl from a family of 15 children raised in small town in South Dakota, falls in love with a city slicker. Lenny Tischler, a Jewish boy from the East coast is shipped out to the Midwest to a college where he meets his true love. I interview friends and family of those who were around during the early years. With the company of Bob Dylan, The Beatles and other artists, we learn how their worlds come together.
